Social hierarchy and our relationship with our dogs

Personally I do suspect that there are some aspects of social hierarchy that relate to our relationship with our dogs. However, I also think it is extremely complicated and easily misunderstood. I think we have a lot to learn about how dogs perceive us, and how they categorize us in relation to other dogs. We clearly are not dogs to them, but then… we clearly are members of their ‘pack.’ I don’t think as of now, anyone has a definitive answers to this question, but I love pondering upon the question. It’s a little like thinking about how many stars there are in the sky….

Girlie on the Twister

Had this toy from Nina Ottosson from Sweden for about 1.5 years and yesterday was the first time we try it.
She is learning to look for treats by moving one disc after another in different directions. Beneath the discs are compartments where I hide treats.

We had a nice and rewarding time together.

Simba's First day on a Treadmill. Walking on a treadmill is great exercise!

There are many benefits your dog can gain through the use of it. The next question is how to teach your little poochie to walk on treadmill?

Before your dog begins exercising on the treadmill, follow the few behavioral guidelines below to ensure your dog’s physical and psychological safety.

  • Dogs have the reasoning capacity of a toddler and can become apprehensive or afraid if asked to do something he has never done before.
  • Never force a dog to do anything he doesn’t want to do. If he feels any fear or hesitation about going on the treadmill alone, then stop. Either try it again later or another day when he is less apprehensive or go back to day 4 and 5.
  • Never force a dog to exercise beyond his potential. If your dog is already overweight or obese, don’t make him do the whole nine yard—10 minutes of brisk walk followed by 20 minutes of jogging.

It is without a doubt that many small dogs have a lot more energy packed into their tiny bodies compare to sporting dogs. Small dogs like Pinschers, Beagles,  and Schnauzers can thrive on long walks. Having said, dogs under 20 pounds are not good candidates for jogging. Due to dog’s willingness to please, they can somehow keep up the pace, but they certainly are not having any fun. Jogging is best left to medium and large sized dogs.

Supervise all training sessions. Do not put too much stress on your dog that his cardiovascular system is overloaded.

This is only a guide, practice at your own risk. Please consult a professional when in doubt!

All dogs both Mix and pure breed are capable of learning difficult exercises….

Dogs that come here are first schooled in basic obedience as a way of life and responding, not as a set of command they obey during a training session. Important distinction. Once the obedience is relatively in place, the dog is taught to carry out obedience lessons holding the training dumbell. This is followed by force fetch and retrieving. When the dog can ethically retrieve and deliver to hand, we switch exclusively to birds, since that is what these dogs are about. The skills of marking, steadiness and diligently hunting the area of a fall are developed.
